Blaisin' Access 95 March Disability Trivia
Blaisin' Access Podcast

Listen here
This is the Blaze and access podcast amplifying disability perspective, one story at a time. Today's Tuesday, March 5. I'm blaise Bryant, and when it is Tuesday, that of course means trivia Tuesday. And joining me is my very best friend in the world since high school. He was the best man in my wedding. I was the best man in his wedding, even though I don't know why he asked me to be a witness because I didn't see him get married. But anyhow, it's my very best friend, James King, who is also a comedian. You can check out his work and upcoming shows at jamesking comedy. Hey, bro.
James KingHey. Thank you for having me on the. We were. We were each other's best men, which meant that we had no other friends that we could ask. I guess that's what that means. Our options were limited. I'm absolutely excited to be here. Long time. I've been on a lot of your different shows and different things, and I know I've done your trivia before, so here's hoping I do better than I did last time, right?
Blaise BryantI think the only podcast you have not been on that I've done is the baseball podcast, the swinging blindly podcast I do with Pat. And the reason for that is, well, you can't look worse than the hosts. So that's why we haven't had you on.
James KingYeah, I mean, baseball is the sport. I don't know, but my current day job, there's a lot of baseball people and they're kind of pushing me in that direction. So who knows? Maybe I'll learn baseball next. We'll see how that goes.
Blaise BryantYeah. Is it divided between Yankee and Mets fans since you're down on the island?
James KingYeah, I'd say for the most part, it's a lot of Yankees, a lot of Mets down here. It really know if someone looks sad, usually Mets, because that's what I've learned just from experience of being down here. Mets fans are usually sadder, but their games are a lot more fun. From what I've heard, if you go to a Mets game live, it's a lot of fun. So that's on the bucket list for this year. So we'll see what happens there.
Blaise BryantThere you go. Well, I've only been to the old Yankee stadium, not the new one. Never been to either met park. It's on my list.
James KingWe'll have to change that. You'll have to come down. Maybe we go to a game together, we figure something else out.
Blaise BryantHell yeah. Let's do it. And speaking of doing things. Let's do trivia. So this is kind of developmental disabilities awareness month, women's history Month themed trivia. So that's what we're going to do here. The first question, this 1972 documentary about this particular place really shed a light on the horrors of institutionalizing people with disabilities. James, was it Meadowbrook, Willowbrook or babbling Brook?
James KingOkay, I'm going to go with answer a, because that is the one that sounds the most familiar to don't. I'm not confident on this one, so I don't feel good about it, but I will go with choice a, please.
Blaise BryantYou are wrong, my friend. It was actually Willowbrook.
James KingWillowbrook. Darn. I knew it wasn't babbling Brook. That one I figured out. But no, I guess I now have a documentary that I need to look into.
Blaise BryantYes, Willowbrook. You can find it. It's on YouTube.
James KingOkay, that's good to know. See, getting questions wrong but still learning. I think there's a metaphor for life in that somewhere, right?
Blaise BryantI mean, we did that in school. That's how we met.
James KingYeah, we got a lot of things wrong in school.
Blaise BryantIsn't that the truth?
James KingYeah. Starting to sound like our dating history. We got a lot of things wrong.
Blaise BryantWell, you said it, not me.
James KingIt's okay. My exes don't listen to anything I do. I can make these jokes.
Blaise BryantRight. Well, I don't know if any, mind you. And at this point, I really don't care because I certainly finally got it right. And you got it right.
James KingYeah. We're both living the dream now.
Blaise BryantHell, yeah. All right, question number two. She is the mother of the disability rights movement who died one year ago. Is it Judy human, Judy Shyimlin or Judy Hill?
James KingI really feel like I did not learn anything in school. Hearing these questions, I'm like, why does none of this sound familiar to me?
Blaise BryantWell, the reason, I'll tell you why. Because disability history is not taught in schools and it needs to be.
James KingYeah. And I completely agree with you because I feel like this is something I should know. And I feel like I remember you posting about this, but I don't know the name. I'm going to go with choice C. I'm going to go Judy Hill, I believe. Was that choice? Am I correct?
Blaise BryantWell, you were correct that it was choice C and Julie Hill is the name, but you were actually wrong.
James KingBut I was wrong. Okay, and who was it?
Blaise BryantIt was Judy human.
James KingJudy Human. Okay, right.
Blaise BryantAnd you know who. Right, right. Well, you know who Judy Shimlin is, right?
James KingThat one sounds familiar. Is she an actress?
Blaise BryantThat's Judge Judy.
James KingThat's Judge Judy.
Blaise BryantYeah. Judith Shinelin? Yeah.
James KingYes. I did not meet her, but my college roommate did because she did the commencement for U. Albany in 2012, and he was in the earth tones, and he says that she's a lot shorter than she looks on tv. She's a shorter person.
Blaise BryantOkay, well, I never thought to look.
James KingYeah, so you would have just been able to tell just from talking to her. The sound would have been coming from a lower point in. She's short. That's all I'm trying to say. I gave up on the analysis.
Blaise BryantI had to do that to you.
James KingHow do you keep inviting me back to this? I'm just coming here to answer questions wrong and humble myself because that's why.
Blaise BryantI invite you back.
James KingI swear, I was smart 20 minutes ago before we started recording. I swear.
Blaise BryantThat's, at best, debatable. Oh, Lord. All right, well, you continue to suck.
James KingYou're over two.
Blaise BryantMaybe you'll get this one right.
James KingYeah, maybe.
Blaise BryantIt was a 50 50 shot.
James KingOkay.
Blaise BryantEven though there's a one in three chance. But you'll either get it right or you don't.
James KingYeah, that's 50 50 to me.
Blaise BryantRight? I don't know. I was just trying to throw more math at you and throw you off balance.
James KingYes, of course I'm off balance enough. You don't have to do that.
Blaise BryantAll right, the third question here. This Illinois senator became disabled when she was fighting in the Iraq war. Is it Tammy Duckworth, Tammy Jones or Tammy Wynat?
James KingThat is a Tammy Duckworth.
Blaise BryantYou got it.
James KingYes. I knew one. The second you said the name, I was like, I know it's her. I know it's her. I know this. I could not have told, you know, that was new information for me, but I knew the name. So it's a question. Right? We're taking it.
Blaise BryantThere you go.
James KingSomeone we know once said, we're taking the points.
Blaise BryantHigh school gym class reference. We're taking the points.
James KingWe're taking the points.
Blaise BryantThat's what you do on the trivia Tuesday here on the Blaze Nexus podcast. You take the points.
James KingYeah, you take the points.
Blaise BryantI got to work that in more often now.
James KingOh, yes, of course. I'm glad I could contribute something, because it's definitely not my question answering that I'm contributing with.
Blaise BryantWell, you got one right at the end.
James KingI will say, in my defense, I usually do a lot of trivia at breweries, so I'm not used to doing my trivia 100% sober. So this is quite the accomplishment for me.
Blaise BryantI mean, we texted about this earlier in the week, so you could have, if you wanted to, you had time to slam down a couple of beers to simulate it.
James KingI could have. That's what I should do next time. I should make sure that I've at least had an IPA or something just a little bit to take the edge off to answer the questions.
Blaise BryantSo here's what I'm going to do the next time I say trivia, I give you a half hour and you drink as much beer as you can.
James KingOkay.
Blaise BryantOr maybe not as much as you can, but as much.
James KingMaybe not as much as I can. If I drink as much as I can, it's going to be, why is he slurring every answer?
Blaise BryantWhat's going on with him? Is he, like, half asleep?
James KingYeah. I don't know what's wrong with this guy, but also, usually my wife is my trivia partner, so usually she can be like, james, that's a dumb answer. And choose something else.
Blaise BryantExactly.
James KingYeah. That's called teamwork.
Blaise BryantRight on. Well, James, as always, it's a pleasure. And you've got some upcoming shows down in the city and on Long island and up in the north country. You can go learn about those and buy a ticket. Follow this dude on social media. He works really hard in addition to his day job because let's face it, being funny, especially for him, is really difficult. Jamesking comedy again, that's jamesking comedy. You're on what, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, all that stuff at Facebook?
James KingYeah, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, TikTok threads. I'm everywhere at. I'm going to be tonight, I'm going to be at a show in Huntington, New York. And then this Friday, I'm going to be in New York City at the Producers club, and then I will be in Plattsburg coming up in April. And that's on April 13, we're doing two shows at Old Soul, which is a nice restaurant or not restaurant. Excuse me? A nice bar up there. There's restaurants on that main street. But, yeah, it's a beautiful bar with lots of craft beers. So definitely fun to come out and have a drink and have a laugh.
Blaise BryantAnd you're an old soul. So once those two shows are done, you're just going to go to bed and sleep for 12 hours until you got to get the train to go back to the city.
James KingYeah, I know. I'm sleeping 6 hours on that train ride. The part of comedy they don't tell you about is how I got to travel for all these things. It's easy to write jokes and tell them. It's hard to travel and book things, right?
Blaise BryantBut do you ever get material just watching people while you're traveling on the train or whatnot?
James KingI do. Sometimes I have a joke, honestly, from when I lived in Albany and I overheard someone at the bus stop say the most wild sentence I've ever heard. But it's definitely not a podcast friendly. So if you want to hear some of those jokes, you might want to come see me live.
Blaise BryantAll right, well, let's just stop promoting you before your head gets too big. And, James, as always, this is a lot of fun. Thanks so much.
James KingYes, thank you for having. I'm always, always a fan of all the things that you're doing. And also, if you're listening to me, plug myself, also follow blaze. He's doing so many different things. Know all of the shows that he does. Follow his baseball podcast, follow this podcast. He puts a lot of work into the stuff that he does, and I don't think he always gets the credit for what he does. So definitely support him as well.
Blaise BryantAll right, I'm getting t shirts made, and you'll be one of the first to get one, so I appreciate that, bro. Thanks.
James KingYes, of course. I can't just sit here and plug myself the whole time. I got to plug you, too, dude.
Blaise BryantRight on, brother. Well, thanks a million, as always.
James KingYes, thank you for having me.
